15. Microservices basics for API developers
Advanced★ Must knowLesson 15 of 15
- Each service owns its data (database per service), deploys independently, communicates via HTTP/gRPC (sync) or messaging (async: Azure Service Bus, RabbitMQ, Kafka).
- API Gateway (Azure API Management, YARP, Ocelot): routing, auth, rate limiting, aggregation; BFF per client type.
- Service discovery (Kubernetes DNS, Aspire service discovery), config centralised, observability via OpenTelemetry traces with correlation IDs.
- Resilience: timeouts, retries, circuit breakers; idempotency keys for POSTs; Outbox for reliable events; Saga for distributed transactions.
- Start with a modular monolith unless you need independent scaling/deployment — microservices add operational cost.
