Career Gaps, Job Changes & Salary Negotiation

Explaining career gaps, layoffs, frequent job changes, domain/tech switches and freelancing; understanding CTC and offers (India and Taiwan), researching market pay, answering expected-salary questions, negotiating, counter-offers, offer comparison and resignation etiquette.
What it is & where it is used

Two topics make many candidates nervous: gaps or unusual career moves, and talking about money. Both are normal parts of hiring, and both go well when you prepare honest, short, confident answers.

Principles:

  • Honesty — background verification checks employment dates, designations and sometimes salary. Never fake experience, payslips or relieving letters (it's grounds for offer withdrawal or termination, and fake documents can be a criminal offence).
  • Brevity + forward focus — explain a gap in 2–3 sentences, then move to what you learned and why you're ready now.
  • Data-driven negotiation — research the market, know your numbers, negotiate the whole package, stay polite.
Versions & history

How expectations have changed:

PeriodShift
Before 2020Gaps often viewed with suspicion; long tenures valued
2020–2021COVID-19 layoffs and caregiving made gaps common and more accepted; remote work expanded
2021–2022"Great Resignation"/talent shortage — big hikes and counter-offers in tech
2022–2024Large tech layoffs worldwide; LinkedIn added a "Career break" option (2022) to profiles
2023–2025Pay-transparency laws spread (several US states; EU Pay Transparency Directive adopted 2023, to apply from 2026); skills-based hiring; more scrutiny of moonlighting in India
2025–2026AI-related restructuring; more contract/freelance work; hiring focused on proven skills and recent hands-on projects
Lifecycle

Job change lifecycle:

  1. Decide why you're moving and what you want (role, tech, pay, location).
  2. Update resume/LinkedIn (consistent dates; career break entry if relevant).
  3. Research market pay for your role, level, location and company type.
  4. Apply / get referrals → interviews.
  5. Salary discussion (recruiter screen and/or HR round).
  6. Offer (verbal → written) → review CTC breakup and terms.
  7. Negotiate (once, with justification) → final offer.
  8. Accept in writing → resign professionally → serve notice / buyout → handle counter-offer → handover.
  9. Collect relieving/experience letters, final settlement (and PF transfer in India) → join → background verification.

Gap explanation lifecycle: acknowledge → reason (brief) → what you did during the gap (learning, projects, certifications, freelancing, caregiving) → proof → readiness and commitment.
