1. Regions, availability zones and the resource hierarchy
Basic★ Must knowLesson 1 of 14
- Region — a set of datacenters in a geography (e.g. Central India — Pune). Choose for latency, data residency, service availability, price.
- Availability zones — physically separate datacenters within a region (own power, cooling, network); zone-redundant services survive a datacenter failure.
- Region pairs — regions paired for disaster recovery and staggered updates.
- Subscription — billing + access boundary; resource group — logical container (same lifecycle); management groups — apply policies across subscriptions.
- Tags (env, owner, cost-centre), naming conventions, resource locks (CanNotDelete, ReadOnly), Azure Policy (enforce rules: allowed regions, required tags), RBAC (who can do what).
