8. Answering "What is your current/expected salary?"
Intermediate★ Must knowLesson 8 of 11
- Current salary: answer truthfully if asked (it can be verified); you may add context ("My current fixed is ₹14 LPA plus variable; my expectation is based on the role and market, not just my current pay"). In some regions, asking about salary history is restricted by law — know your local rules.
- Expected salary: give a researched range or a number with justification, ideally after you understand the role.
"Based on the scope of this role, my experience with .NET microservices on Azure and current market data for similar roles in Bengaluru, I'm looking for a fixed component in the range of ₹24–27 lakhs. I'm flexible depending on the overall package, including variable pay and growth opportunities."
- Early in the process you can defer politely: "I'd like to learn more about the role and responsibilities first, but I can share that my expectation is in line with market rates for a senior .NET engineer."
- Don't give a number far below market out of fear, and don't anchor unrealistically high without justification.
