1. Explaining a career gap
Formula: Reason (1 sentence) → What I did (proof) → Why I'm ready now.
Common honest reasons: layoff/restructuring, health (no details needed), family/caregiving, relocation (e.g. moving countries), higher studies or exam preparation, starting a business/freelancing, visa or work-permit waiting period, deliberate upskilling, burnout recovery.
Layoff: "My position was eliminated in a company-wide restructuring in March. Since then I completed the AZ-204 certification and built an order-management API with .NET 10, EF Core and Azure Container Apps — it's on my GitHub. I'm now looking for a stable, long-term role."
Family: "I took 10 months off to care for a family member. That's fully resolved now. During the last three months I refreshed my skills — I built a React + ASP.NET Core project and revised SQL Server performance tuning — and I'm ready to commit full-time."
Relocation: "I relocated to Taiwan and waited for my work authorisation. I used the time to study cloud architecture and contribute to an open-source project, and I'm fully eligible to work now."
Don'ts: don't lie or invent a company; don't over-share medical or personal details; don't sound apologetic or bitter; don't leave the gap unexplained on your resume if it's longer than ~6 months — a one-line "Career break: upskilling in Azure and React (projects on GitHub)" helps.
